Why Thursdays feel heavy

Mid-week, many people cannot name one good day so far. The week has a shape, and the shape is personal. It only becomes visible when evenings are placed side by side in colour instead of remembered one at a time.

It is Wednesday, name one good day

Try it now, before reading on. Name one day this week that was clearly good.

Many people pause there, and the pause is interesting. The days were not terrible, they simply blur into a single stretch with no edges.

The week has a shape

A week is not seven equal units. Some days carry meetings, some carry the house, some carry the leftover weight of the day before.

Lived from the inside, the shape is invisible. Every day feels like the present, and the present is always a bit heavy.

Why Thursday gets the blame

By Thursday the week has been going for four days and the weekend is still not here. Whatever did not get done is now due, and whatever was tiring has accumulated.

That is one common story, and for plenty of people it is true. It is not the only story.

Your hard day may not be Thursday

For some people the heavy evening is Monday, after a weekend that was not restful. For others it is Sunday night, when Monday is already in the room.

Parents often find the hard day is whichever one has no help. Shift workers have a week that does not line up with the calendar at all.

Memory will not tell you

Asked which day of the week is hardest, most people answer from the last bad one they remember. That is not the same as the day that is usually hardest.

The only way to know is to record each evening on the same scale and then look at a few weeks of them together.

Three weeks is about the minimum, because one odd week will mislead you. Two months is better, and by then you will probably have stopped guessing.

Seeing it in colour

When each evening is one colour, a lighter or a heavier shade against your own usual, the week stops being a blur. The same weekday in the same shade, three weeks running, is hard to miss.

In Insenia that is the Days list, and after about two weeks a weekly mirror puts the pattern into a sentence or two. It describes what it sees and offers no advice.
