Insenia vs Daylio

Daylio captures your day without writing a single word, and has done so since 2015. Insenia also skips the typing, but asks five questions that change each evening and follow up on what you said before. The two compared, row by row.

Daylio is the app closest to Insenia in one respect: its own site promises a diary without writing down a single word. If you have tried Daylio and liked that idea, this page is for you.

The difference is what happens around that idea. Daylio lets you tap a mood and activities and then shows charts, Insenia asks you five generated questions each evening and shows you the colour of the day.

What Daylio does well

  • Established in 2015, with Apple "Apps we love" and Google "Editors' pick" mentions on its site and press from the Guardian, Forbes, Mashable and Lifehacker.
  • A diary without writing a single word, with a fixed set of moods and activities to tap.
  • Charts, a year in pixels, goals, a lock, themes and a long feature list, all shown on the site.
  • A "MAX PRIVACY" claim and a private and secure section on the site, plus a FAQ and a help centre.
  • Available on iPhone and Android, with both store badges in the hero.

What Insenia does differently

  • Five questions each evening, generated for you from your profile and your past answers, so a question on day two follows up on day one.
  • Answered with a slider or a tap in thirty to sixty seconds, then the evening becomes one colour against your own usual, never a score.
  • No streaks and no missed days. A skipped evening does not exist in the app's language, and the day breaks at 03:00 so a late night still belongs to its evening.
  • No account, no email, no name. Answers are stored on the phone first, with a pseudonymous key on the device, and you can export everything as JSON or delete it in two taps.
  • The ritual is free forever, and the price of the deeper picture is on the site.

Who should pick which

Pick Daylio if you want a long established tracker with a fixed mood scale, activity tags and charts, and you like having many features to turn on.

Pick Insenia if you want to be asked, not to tag. The questions change each night and follow what you said before, the evening becomes one colour, nothing counts the days you skip, and you can trytonight's five questionson the web before installing anything.
